Carbon Management Canada (CMC) is pleased to see the release of the first edition of CSA TS-027, Performance metrics for evaluating methane detection, measurement, and quantification (DMQ) technologies.
The new Technical Specification provides guidance to support more consistent, transparent and comparable evaluation of methane detection, measurement and quantification technologies used across Canada’s oil and gas sector.
As methane monitoring technologies continue to evolve, operators and other organizations have an increasing number of technologies and approaches to consider. CSA TS-027 provides a common framework for evaluating technology performance, helping users better understand and compare the capabilities of different approaches across a range of applications.
CMC’s Contribution
CMC’s Methane Detection and Quantification Testing Protocol Canada helped inform the development of CSA TS-027, providing alignment on terminology, definitions and controlled-release performance evaluation concepts.
The Technical Specification brings together input from industry, technology developers, testing facilities, regulators and research institutions, building on existing work and frameworks related to methane emissions detection and quantification.
CSA TS-027 covers a broad range of methane DMQ technologies, including handheld and portable devices, emissions monitoring systems, uncrewed aerial vehicles, satellite-based remote sensing, vehicle-mounted and aircraft-based systems, as well as parametric systems that use operational data to calculate emissions.
The guidance outlines key performance metrics and validation parameters along with suggested evaluation processes and considerations for environmental and deployment conditions.
Importantly, CSA TS-027 is intended as guidance rather than a regulatory requirement. It does not prescribe performance thresholds or compare individual technology providers. Instead, its purpose is to promote consistent evaluation practices and greater transparency in how methane DMQ technology performance is reported and communicated.
CMC is proud to have contributed to work that supports the continued development of the atmospheric emissions, measurement and quantification field in Canada.
