CMC hires transfer-to-practice coach

By Richard Adamson, Managing Director

In accordance with our strategic emphasis on maximizing the impact of research results, Carbon Management Canada has brought on a commercialization expert to help researchers develop strategies for research results arising out of funded programs.

New technologies go through a number of stages before they are ready for market. One of CMC’s mandates is to help researchers move their ideas from the drawing board to the bench to demonstration projects and finally into large scale practice.

Our new transfer-to-practice (T2P) coach, Alessandro Biglioli, brings many layers of expertise to the table when he works with each of the teams.  Beginning with his foundation in aeronautical engineering, his career has spanned R&D, business development, general management and executive roles in industries ranging from medical devices to IT to satellites.  He has been involved in a wide variety of technology startups including building materials and medical sensors, and was a founding partner of Carbon Engineering, industry partner in one of CMC-NCE’s research projects. His experience in commercializing technologies as Acting Managing Director with Biovantage gave him great depth in options relating to Intellectual Property strategies.

As the T2P Coach, Alessandro will help CMC researchers to realize the full transfer-to-practice potential of their projects. He will work with them to identify and assess strengths and weaknesses of the technology, potential markets and market channels, possible takers and partners, IP positions and strategy, funding needs, and potential sources of funds. He will put his expertise at the service of the research teams to help them create and execute a successful T2P strategy and plan for future developments of their technologies.

When you have an opportunity to talk with Alessandro don’t be afraid to ask questions. You never know where the conversation might go.  Ask him about his involvement in the startup of the Ansari X-Prize for space exploration, or Beamed Energy Propulsion systems.  Or ask him about how to translate your latest developments into a business opportunity.

Alessandro is presently completing his Executive MBA through the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary.
