Sixty-seven STEM students from across Canada recently took part in a virtual reality tour of Carbon Management Canada’s Newell County Field Research Station (FRS). The students were participating in the Shad program at Red Deer Polytechnic, a transformative summer program that equips high school students with the confidence to lead through immersive, hands-on, STEM learning experiences.
Following a lesson from CMC’s Junior Scientist Dr. Doriane Drolet and Tamara Gale, Director of External Relations and Communications on underground carbon dioxide storage, students put their knowledge to the test with an interactive quiz. They then donned VR headsets to explore the FRS, where carbon dioxide is injected underground as part of CMC’s carbon storage research program.
The VR headsets were provided by Careers in Energy through their energy outreach and education program, helping make this immersive learning experience possible.
The experience offered students a unique glimpse into real-world carbon management research and the exciting career opportunities emerging in the low-carbon economy.
